An Update on 100 Ideas Autism Summit

Dear Parents and Advocates,

I want to give you an update on the restraint and seclusion portion of the 100 Ideas Autism Summit I spoke at on Tuesday 9/16/08.

The R & S portion went very well and people were very interested in this growing problem.  There were lots of questions from people in the audience and I met a few legislatures that took an interest in the problem of R & S.  Two of the legislatures told me they were not familiar with this problem and would like to meet with me to discuss  R & S in more detail. I think the session brought more attention and awareness to the subject of restraint and seclusion to many people that had no idea this was even happening in our public schools.

The Attorney General’s Office had one person there taking notes.
I had much higher hopes with their involvement but it doesn’t look like any support will be available from their office.  I would say that’s another closed door for us.

Some good news
The FLDOE has pulled the Rule on physical force for now and everything is on hold while they go over our public phone conference and written comments that were submitted.
Please see attached recommended revisions submitted to the FLDOE on 9/11/08 by the Florida Advocacy Center for Persons with Disabilities for draft rule “Standards for the Use of Reasonable Force.”
I have requested an appointment with Senator Deutch to discuss resubmitting the updated bill on Restraint and Seclusion to legislatures in 2009.

I will keep you all posted as I receive more information.

Regards,
Phyllis
