Restraints & Seclusion in Florida Public Schools
Dear Florida Families,
I hope some of you are going to be able to attend the 100 Ideas Foundation to be a part of the session on the Education Issues
Panel Discussion which will be held on Tuesday 9/16 from 8:30 am – 11:00 am. A portion of the Educational issues will cover
restraint and seclusion and I have been asked to be a part of this panel discussion. I will be speaking on behalf of all our children in
regards to restraint and seclusion in the FL public school system.
I know that many of you are discouraged because the Attorney General’s Office has announced that they have no authority over public
school districts but they are the first and only agency in the 3 years that I have been working on this issue that has said they will listen to
what parents have to say. The Attorney General’s Office will be participating in all sessions. We have been told that the format of the
program will allow for parents to ask questions and voice their concerns.
Listening to our abuse stories is not going to fix the problem but it may introduce us to some new people that will be willing to stand up
and offer us help and support. If there is the smallest of opportunities to get help we must take it. We must not give up hope and keep
speaking up so our voices can be heard. If we do nothing then nothing will ever change and restraint and seclusion of our children in the
public school system will continue.
Regards,
Phyllis
